    Hello dear colleagues,

    It’s time for our regular market research, so next country in turn is Vietnam. As usual, this article will be devoted to some statistical data related to the Internet usage in Vietnam.

    Let’s start with the general overview of this country:

    The total population of Vietnam in 2017 is 94,957,371

    34.7% of the population is urban (33,121,357 people in 2017)

    The number of people living in major cities:

    • Ho Chi Minh – 7.298 million
    • Hanoi (capital) – 3.629 million
    • Can Tho – 1.075 million
    • Haiphong – 1.075 million
    • Da Nang – 952,000
    • Bien Hoa – 834,000

    Ethnic groups: Kinh (Viet) 85.7%, Tay 1.9%, Thai 1.8%, Muong 1.5%, Khmer 1.5%, Mong 1.2%, Nung 1.1%, Hoa 1%, other 4.3% (2009 est.)

    Vietnamese is an official language in Vietnam. English is also widely spoken and it is considered to be the second language. People there also speak some French, Chinese, and Khmer.

    The median age in Vietnam is 30.8 years

    At the moment of 2016 the number of Internet users was 49,063,762 whereas the number of non-users – 1,564,438. It should be noted that the number of internet users increases steadily year by year, in 2010 there were 27,081,658 users.

    Internet speed in Vietnam is not that fast. It should be stated that Vietnam Internet speed is among the slowest in Asia Pacific:

    Average internet connection speed – 5.1 Mbps web, 2.8 Mbps mobile

    Average Latency – 186 ms 

    Average Download – 12.38 Mbps
    Average Upload – 11.41 Mbps

    • Mobile phone (all types) – 93%
    • Smart phone – 55%
    • Laptop or desktop computer – 46%

    As for the media time spent with the help of this or that type of electronic device, here are the figures (average daily use):

    • 4 hours 39 min – Internet surfing via PC or tablet
    • 2 hours 25 min – Internet surfing via mobile phone
    • 2 hours 18 min – social media usage via any device
    • 1 hour 31 min – TV watching time

    Most Vietnamese surf the Internet every day. The statistics of Internet usage frequency:

    • 78% – every day
    • 18% – at least once per week
    • 3% – at least once per month
    • 1% – less than once per month

    The considerable number of people in Vietnam shops online. Commercial online activity:

    • 37% – purchases product or service
    • 45% – searches for a product or service to buy
    • 33% – visits online stores
    • 32% – purchases via laptop or PC
    • 23% – purchases via mobile phone

    Vietnamese are active communicators, and they use mobile devices mostly for chatting. Of course it is not the only thing which interests people in Vietnam, so the other mobile activities are:

    • 34% – mobile messengers
    • 29% – watching videos
    • 23% – playing games
    • 19% – mobile banking
    • 28% – map services

    As it was stated above, Vietnamese are active social media users – 35 million (37% of the population)

    Social users accessing via mobile phone – 29 million (31% of the population)
